“Seek God and live” is the message of Amos, a shepherd turned prophet, to an unjust people. Why? People had lost their way – to God and to right relationship with others – and injustice ran rampant. The poor were oppressed while greed, sexual abuse, and idolatry became the norm for Israel. The Book of Amos is an ancient text with an urgent and prescient message. Amos’ call for “justice [to] run down like waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream” was famously quoted by MLK, Jr. Almost 55 years later, this scripture remains relevant. On Sunday, Josh will start our series by examining what it means to seek God and live and why God’s judgment and justice have everything to do with this call.
