Artist Circle is a monthly meeting of artists in New Haven.
Anyone is welcome at Artist Circle! Whether your a professional painter or create write poems a private creative expression. You may not consider yourself an "artist," but if you are compelled to make things, then bring them and see what happens.
There are two things you should bring to Artist Circle: First, a piece of art you've made. Second, whatever essential you need to make whatever it is you create (a guitar, a notebook, paints, an iphone, clay, embroidery, a laptop...).
Every meeting is a unique experience, but they all work just like this:
1. SHARE: Each person brings a piece of art to share. We go around the circle and share what we brought (though not as a space for feedback or critique). If you bring a long piece of writing or performance, we just ask that you aim for an excerpt that's 5 minutes or less. Some people use our meetings as motivation to make new art, but sometimes something is show that was made many years ago. It doesn't have to be your favorite, or perfect, or even finished to bring and share.
2. SWAP: As fellow artists are sharing, we each look for something that provokes us towards further creativity. We then draw inspiration directly from the work anther artist brought to the group, selecting the piece we'll be working off of during the next hour.
3. CREATE: We spend about 1 hour creating something new. A poet might write inspired by a drawing. Someone may illustrate a song. A dance maybe choreographed about a photo.
4. CIRCLE: We circle back up and share again what we've created during the time. It may feel vulnerable - that's normal and even good! This is an exercise that stretches us as creatives.
