In our nonviolence sermon series, we’ve referenced folks who were notable actors in the campaign in Selma for voting rights — Amelia Boynton, Diane Nash, John Lewis, Viola Liuzzo, and of course, Martin and Coretta King. It’s easy to paint these heroes, especially MLK, with a broad brush and refuse to think about their journey of formation and becoming. This Friday, we’re screening Selma in order to see some of what we’ve learned in this series at play: nonviolence that’s aggressive, negative peace that’s worth overthrowing, practices of flourishing and formation for the long haul, and a commitment to endure physical violence and even die because of a commitment to a greater Love. Even if you’ve seen this film before, I trust God will teach you new things in light of our time together with Jesus, in scripture, and with one another. You can watch in a few ways: over Zoom @ 8pm tonight with Deniqua as your host or renting/buying Selma yourself and watching it over the weekend before we have a discussion on the film, Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 7 pm.
